Fix: Problem with Renault R-Link 2 audio streaming via bluetooth?

Introduction

I got my new Renault a couple of weeks ago. A really nice car. It was equipped with the R-Link 2 that allows bluetooth connection with your iPhone. Great for making telephone calls and audio streaming (e.g. audio books, Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music etc.).

However, the R-link system has a glitch that blocks audio streaming under certain circumstances! I think that it’s only an issue for iPhone users. Here’s how to fix the issue.

The problem

The problem was that bluetooth audio streaming didn’t work? The telephone connection for calls worked perfectly and in the telephone settings my iPhone was connected for both telephone and audio use (see picture). Still, I wasn’t allowed to stream my music.

When entering the menu system Multimedia -> Media I could see that the bluetooth symbol displayed correctly that my phone was connected but it was kind of “greyed out” and no music was allowed the be streamed.

Solution

The problem, it seemed, was an error in the Renault R-link2 firmware that do not allow iPhone users to stream music if there is no songs in the phones library (Music). You just need one song in your library then it will work.

The fastest way is to just buy a song in iTunes and then download it to the phone. It takes no more than a minute and your good to go. If you previously have bought an album etc then you may download for free again.

If you want to “save” the money, you may also connect your phone to your home computer and download a song that you synced with iTunes at home.

Problemer med at streame musik fra din iPhone i din Renault? Det er et problem med software i dit R-link 2 system, der gør at du skal have et musiknummer på din telefon før du kan benytte streaming fra andre tjenester f.eks. lydbøger, Spotify, TDC Music, Apple Music, Tidal etc.

Løsningen er at købe/downloade et nummer fra “Musik” app’en på din iPhone. Når først du har 1 nummer liggende på telefonen, så fungerer bluetooth afspilningen super.
